Youth Hunting Weekend

youth weekendVERMONT – The third and last youth hunting weekend just finished up, allowing young hunters all over the state to take their shot at the sport, and maybe taking home a deer of their own.

This was the lucky case for Ryan Godfrey, a hunter who grabbed his second deer ever, a young buck this past Sunday morning.

“I’d rather have a buck than a doe, it’s nice to get that,” says Godfrey. “Obviously [the deer] is not the biggest but it’s going to be good meat to eat and it’s a nice trophy.”

The Vermont Fish and Wildlife organizes the annual youth hunting weekends that take place in the state with the purpose of promoting understanding of the sport and safe hunting practices amongst beginners.

Once a kill was made, hunters in the Northeast region could report to various places including Rick’s Gun Shop, the Village Sports Shop, the Wheelock Village Store, Paul’s Whistle Shop, and Barney’s Market.

“We were expecting a higher turn out,” says Village Sports Shop employee Jamie Amodeo. “There was some success this past weekend, but overall the deer population has been a down a bit compared to years prior.”

This coming weekend will mark the start of a whole new season, rifle and late bear hunting. Rifle season will take place from November 14th through the 29th, and late bear hunting will be from November 14th and come to a close the 22nd
