SAINT JOHNSBURY - Saturday afternoon, Saint Johnsbury Academy held a memorial service in Fuller Hall for Melissa Jenkins.
Co-workers, family, friends, and members of the community gathered to celebrate her life on the one-year anniversary of her death.
As the Saint Johnsbury Academy Hilltones sang "Fix You" by Coldplay, some of her students like Danielle Prevost talked about her memories with Jenkins, and how she encouraged her to apply to Saint Michael's College. "Despite the fact I couldn't tell her I got accepted on earth, she was celebrating with me in heaven."
Others made signs saying "Love Wins", which lined the walls of Fuller Hall, and was heard throughout many speaches. "We cannot let evil and hatred win," said Jenkins' cousin Meridith Root Berry, adding "because love wins."
"I'm sure Melissa had no idea of the impact of her life and (the) message would have here, to inspire an entire community like she has," said Headmaster of Saint Johnsbury Academy, Tom Lovett.
Waterford, VT couple Alan and Patricia Prue are charged with the murder of Jenkins. Alan Prue is facing first degree murder charges, while Patricia Prue is facing aggravated murder charges. Both are scheduled to appear in court later this year.
