Weather Spotters

wind speedST JOHNSBURY- Social networking for some its a way to keep up on what their friends are doing. To others its a way of  finding a job. For some its even a way to record weather. Tracking weather may seem mundane to some but to others there is a large network of people who do just that.

Gil Ford was a pioneer in making this become more well known to the public. Steve Maleski, a Fairbanks museum meteorologist, knows all about the accomplishments of Gil "I know he took daily observations for about 65 years, and he had an award named after him for people that were pare of the Hydro-logic Observation Network,"said Maleski. For those that want to be involved in weather spotting the CCRS would be a great place to start.

"You might want to begin by becoming a member of the CCRHS network which is quite basic.  It's not a climatological network, it's just daily precipitation and snow fall, and then if you show persistence and dedication and show that you're reliable in your reports, the National Weather Service might consider you for a climatological station,"said Maleski.
