ST. JOHNSBURY - Municipal parking permits in St. Johnsbury will soon become more expensive.
Parking prices in St. Johnsbury have been stagnant for years, and the town thinks it's time to change that because of lost revenue. The parking permits cost about $175 to maintain, and with residents only paying $125, that is a lot of money the town needs.
Currently it costs $125 for a daytime parking permit. Over the next three years, residents will see that number increase by $25 for the next three years, capping out at a $200 in 2019.
The town manager Chad Whitehead said, "We had considered just making the step right up to $175," but he thought it would make more sense to make a gradual transition to the desired $175.
Overnight passes will also see a higher increase of $40 annually. Right now prices are $300, but next year they will be $340, and the following year will be $380.
Parking permits currently bring the town $25,500 annually. If the town sells all of its available 350 permits at $175, it will generate $61,250 which is $35,750 more than the town currently has for an income from parking.
Parking permits at the new rate will start being sold on October 2017.
