Healthy Meals

HealthyKidsMealsST. JOHNSBURY - The American Heart Association of Vermont has been out in full force trying to fight childhood obesity.  They are highlighting healthy eating in a September series of events at local restaurants to showcase healthy eating for kids.

"We decided to hold healthy kids meals events at restaurants across Vermont and we chose seven communities just so we could spread it around across Vermont and try to hit all different communities and different kinds of restaurants. The restaurants we picked just had to do with geographical location so we could reach all corners of Vermont," says Tina Zuk, Government Relations Director of American Heart Association.

Locally, The Kingdom Taproom in St. Johnsbury held an event this past Wednesday night.

Zuk went on to say, "ultimately, we'd love to see every restaurant in the state of Vermont that currently markets a kids meal to kids to have that kids meal meet nutrition standards."

The American Heart Association believes that quick meals for kids can often be unhealthy, while healthy meals should become more common in the future.  The organizations' guidelines for children's meals are that they must contain no more than six hundred calories, thirty-five percent of calories from total sugars, and a half a gram of trans fat.
