Trio is potentially getting shut down, after a statement came out from President Trump with intent to completely alimentate the program.
Upward Bound is funded through Trio, in which it benefits students who need financial support for college (over 7 thousand in Vermont), or academic support to graduate and be proactive in their future careers. These past few months have been very difficult for UB, as AmeriCorps (a partner in supporting money and volunteer work) got terminated and is now in court. If these programs go away, it will create more difficulty for students of low-income households to attend college, this would impact multiple states and school’s who rely on enrollment. “15 year olds and 16 year olds they really look at is at how does it affect me right now, oh I may not have a summer program to go to, oh I can’t go into these classes, who’s gonna bring me on college tours because my parents are working parents, how can I get to a college”, (Rick Williams). Rick Williams (director at Lyndon) feels confident that UB will continue to use funds for 2027, which gives them time to help incoming students. As of now, it’s still being decided on by congress to see if the funds will be stopped right away, but for now, UB is working on starting up the summer 2025 program.
