BURKE - A public forum was held at the Tamarack Grill in Burke last night to discuss more on the upcoming changes to the town and expansion of Burke Mountain. The Northeast Kingdom Collaborative, as well as local officials and others who have businesses and organizations involved in the NEK Initiative met with members of the community.
Their motive? To answer any pressing questions residents may have.
Burke Mountain General Managers Tim McGuire gave a presentation on the planned renovations, and then opened the floor for questions.
Ann Nyguard of the Rural Center talked about how important the NEK Initiative will be for future residents of the Northeast Kingdom. "There are lifetime residents of the Kingdom, or they will go away and come back to the Kingdom. It's important for us to start introducing some of the careers that are going to be available here."
Phase one of the project will create around 600 jobs, highly benefiting the region. The jobs will vary from construction to hospitality management.
Nyguard also stressed the importance of educating not just the adults, but the children about the NEK Initiative. "Children are our future. There's an opportunity right now to start influencing our children to look at career pathways that have not been available in the Northeast Kingdom before."
