BURKE - At the senior meal sites, which are in various locations across the state of Vermont, seniors or anybody else can receive a great meal. At some locations, however, much more then a good meal is offered.
Every other Wednesday at the senior meal site in Burke you are bound to find great food, laughter, and dancing. Senior citizen Sherry Hevey explains why these meals are important to her and the rest of the seniors that attend. "The biggest thing for seniors is to be able to be with people and every body here either picks on everybody hugs everybody or just laughs and has a good time so for me I think that is the most important part for seniors."
Having this meal site is dear to the senior citizens heart because they not only get a good meal, but they also make good friends from their community that they are able to see each week. Volunteer and head of fundraising for the program Therese Stone says, "They come here they have lunch with people then they got friends they play cards that's on Wednesday and yeah friendship and it gets them out of the house so they don't eat alone."
Meals are made and given out to seniors and their community every Monday, Wednesday, and Friday, but without all the help for the volunteers and fundraising, this would not be possible.
Stone said that they've done quite a few events over the past few weeks, and plan on doing many more. "Well I did a hunter breakfast on Saturday and I did a bazaar after the hunter breakfast and we do fifty-fifty we do a raffle of whatever, and today we have a collection of quarters that we are doing that we are selling tickets on, and then we are going to have a yard sale in June."
