Burke Looking to Go Green

The Burke selectboard has discussed the possibility of installing solar panels on the roof of their recycling building. Around 66 panels would be installed on the roof, with each of those panels getting an equal amount of sun-light.

The town clerks office has also looked into the possibility of purchasing solar panels of their own. A non-binding plan that has been discussed would not have any cables run from any of the buildings the panels are attached to, and it would allow the town six months to make sure that the solar panels were not only working, but have a signifigant effect on the buildings energy cost.

Solar panels can come in different sizes and strength's in terms of how many watts it can produce. According to Solar Energy USA, solar panels can help cut the cost of wattage in half, depending on the solar panel. With the national average of a watt costing between six and eight dollars, getting it to as low as three or four can dramatically change the price of an energy bill.

Burke Selectman Sam Sanderson said that although the project is being discussed, but it is far from a sure thing right now. "We'll get all our figures, maybe get figures from another company," Sanderson said. "Then it has to go to town meeting, because it would be a budget item."

The Burke selectboard will be further discussing the plan at their next meeting.
