ST. JOHNSBURY - September may be National Yoga Awareness month, but Heart Space Yoga Center in St. Johnsbury promotes yoga awareness year round. Heart Space’s owner Andrea Thibaudeau believes that yoga is beneficial for everyone.
The Department of Health & Human Services has designated September as National Yoga Awareness month. Nationally, The Yoga Health Foundation plays a key role in this month of awareness. Their website provides yoga-goers with yoga month schedules and information about yoga. The site also helps newcomers find yoga centers near them.
Locally, Heart Space Yoga in St. Johnsbury brings yoga to the Northeast Kingdom. Their website offers class schedules and information about the center, as well as additional information on yoga. One thing the center’s owner Andrea Thibaudeau stresses is that yoga is not just exercise - despite what most may believe.
“Being able to do yoga doesn’t mean that you can make all of these shapes with your body. In fact, that’s not at all what the practice really is. It’s not about the outer form, it’s about being exactly where you are, exactly how you are. That’s what matters, is the connection to yourself,” Thibaudeau says.
Yoga has been practiced for thousands of years, and though there are varied answers, it is thought that yoga got its start somewhere in the Indus Valley. Though modern yoga is not the same as it was at the start, some modern yoga positions emulate the early style. Despite the position differences between early and modern yoga, the key to becoming a true “yogi” lies in connection to yourself.
Yoga has been said to reduce anxiety and stress, as well as being an aid to those suffering from depression. Thibaudeau says that physically yoga can strengthen your body, help your respiratory system, and can even help your nervous system.
