BASEBALLVERMONT- With the chilly weather and rainy days persisting, it was a question of when high school sports teams would get to see their fields. That question was answered yesterday when many local teams were finally able to step onto their fields to begin their season.


Baseball and softball dominted the local sports world yesterday. Lyndon Institute's varsity baseball team hit the diamond for their home opener against U-32. The teams were evenly matched throughout, but the Vikings eventually prevailed, winning 12-11. The Lady Vikings varsity softball team played a double-header against U-32, losing the first 8-4, but winning the second 14-13.

The St. Johnsbury Academy varsity teams were away yesterday, traveling to Bellows Free Academy in St. Albans. Colton Hudson needed only 80 pitches to lead the baseball team to a 7-1 victory, while the softball team was defeated 5-2.

Danville was away at Winooski with both teams coming home with wins; the boys baseball team came came out with a blowout victory 21-3, and the Lady Indians faired just as nicely winning 18-2.

North Country Union took on Milton, with baseball losing 6-2 and softball coming away with a 10-9 victory.

In tennis, the Hilltoppers varsity boys and girls teams were at Champlain Valley Union high school, but both came away with 7-0 losses.

And finally, the Hilltoppers Varsity girls lacrosse team was at Rice yesterday but was unable to defeat the Green Knights, losing 13-8.

On deck for today for SJA, the Hilltopper's track team will face off against Lake Region Union and Spaulding in a home meet beginning at 3:30, the varsity boys tennis is away at Colchester while varsity girls tennis against Colchester is home, both beginning at 3:30, and varsity lacrosse plays at Spaulding, which begins at 4:00pm

Also today, North Country Union is at Champlain Valley Union for their track meet at 3:30, NCU boys tennis is at Spaulding at 3:30, and NCU girls tennis is home against Spaulding at 3:30.
