ST. JOHNSBURY - The Hostess Bakery Outlet in Saint Johnsbury that has been in operation for over 35 years, closed its doors over the weekend.
After the announcement of Hostess going bankrupt and putting 18,000 employees out of work, the outlet had to sell everything in the store which meant cheap prices for customers. "Twinkies were 3 dollars a box" says shopper Dan Cleary,"the receipts right here, yep 214 dollars worth."
Hostess fans braved the cold lining up a half hour before the doors opened early Saturday morning. "There is no other hostess," shopper Patrick Rushia said, "its really sad they're going out of business, I'm gonna miss them."
Some like Earl Jenson came from miles away to pick up some last snacks and say goodbye to the store. "When I was brought up, this is one of the only bread stores around here."
Darlene Brown and Cindy Chamberlin have worked at the store for a combined 36 years and say they'll miss the job and their customers. "It's been a good job, and its time to get on a new bus so I would like to thank all our customers that have been coming in over the years that support us, but this is the end."
Cindy plans on going back to college in the near future while Darlene says she'll take one day at a time.
