Spring Equinox

Spring Equinox 2 2018-02-14 at 7.49.33 PMST. JOHNSBURY- The Fairbanks Museum and Planetarium has been one of the eighty recipients across America of the Collections Assessment for Preservations (CAP) grant. The Fairbanks museum is the only museum in the state of Vermont to receive this grant.

CAP helps small and medium sized museums improve their collections, learning programs and plumbing and heating throughout the building. This grant is through the Institute of Museum and Library Services and through the Foundation of the American Institute for conservation of Historic and Artistic Works.

"It's a great opportunity for the museum and it's a great opportunity to bring in outside experts to assess the collections the care that we are able to give them as well as the historic building," said Collections Manager Beau Harris.

The grant process takes about two days for a professional collector and a building assessor to look and see what a museum will particularly need. These accessors also interview the staff of the building as well as governing officials. This assessment really makes sure that the museum or building is in desire need for assistance through the grant. The museum had a historic preservation person from the University of Vermont for the building and a natural history conservator that looked at the collections.

"I hope that this will help preserve the museum for future generations, we've been around since 1891 we would like to be around for another 125 years," said Harris.

The museum recently started a preschool through the grant as well as environmental friendly methods of heating and cooling the three buildings. The museum was built in 1891 and was named and owned by Franklin Fairbanks.
