Gifts for our Troops

vtsupports finalSt. Johnsbury - Dozens of volunteers gathered at the Elk's Club in St. Johnsbury to help send a little holiday spirit to soldiers serving over season.

VT Supports has been putting this gift drive on for 10 years now, and it has grown into a community event. Dorcas Lee, started the event back in 2004 because of her son. "My son was in Iraq and he called me one day and asked if I would like to do something for the troops, and it threw me when he called, and then I said sure," Lee said.

Ever since that day, VT Supports has been giving gifts for troops over seas. "It is to give gifts and so forth for all the troops everywhere. It isn't just Iraq, not it's lots of other places too."

The group has sent out 450 packages to those serving, with help from volunteers. "It's a kind of way to come together so people know military members and how they have to be away for christmas and holidays, so it's hard on them and their families. Supporting their families also helps a lot, and I think it's a way for everyone to be involved," Megan Wood said, who is one of the volunteers.

VT Supports President, Nicquelle Fortin, loves this day because she enjoys supporting the troops anyway she can. "This is three hours that we can spend, just straight supporting them for the holidays."

It is support like this that helps many service men and women feel a little bit closer to home for the holidays. VT Supports would like to thank everyone who contributed or helped out with this year's gift drive.
