Looking to Repeat

LIGirlsBasketballLyndon- It was a memorable spring for Lyndon Institute’s Girls Basketball team last season. The Vikings won the Division II State Championship, their first in school history. Since then, the team lost its senior leadership that brought them to the top of the totem pole and after winning it all, according to VPA standards, moved up to Division I.

For Eric Berry, who is entering his sixth season as L-I’s Head Coach, is moving up a division means playing at a new and higher level. “It is a challenge as we know that throughout the season and, should we earn a spot in the playoffs we would be facing some of the best teams in the state but it is certainly a challenge that we welcome.” His goals are really no different than any other season, and his approach will be to have his girls ‘play the best basketball that they can through the season and until the end of our year.’ “We will hope that our hard work will give us a chance to go for the title once again this year.”

Returning senior Jade Berry, coach Eric Berry’s daughter and team captain, plans to take what she learned from last year’s leadership and apply to this year’s team. “I know what is expected of me from observing how last years main captain, Madalyn Sanborn, approached things like establishing and working toward team goals and addressing hardships within the team,” said Berry. “I hope to bring positivity, leadership, and a love for the game to this years team and I believe we can accomplish a lot more than what is expected for of us.”

Jade says that many have underestimated the team and the quality of it, but remaining positive, outworking the other team, taking negativity and pushing it away and showing what they are capable of would be very satisfying. “It would be a good goal to accomplish.”

At this time, the Girls Basketball schedule has not been posted on the school’s website.
