St. Johnsbury Armory Update

St. Johnsbury - The future of the St. Johnsbury Armory is up for debate once more. A hired consultant from Rego is currently determining whether the police dispatch center could exist within the already approved $5.4 million budget. If that is not the case, what other alternatives could the armory serve? The current plan is to potentially utilize the building's existing wood structure rather than replacing it, which would greatly reduce the cost and potentially bring the project within the town's approved budget.

A majority of the remediation work for the building is complete; the remaining task is mostly removing the asbestos in the roof, which cannot happen until construction begins. The consultant is scheduled to appear at the April 27 St. Johnsbury Selectboard meeting to give a recommendation to the town regarding the next steps.

"But I also mentioned in our last meeting that we asked to be cognizant of the funders and provide, you know, the community with the kind of benefit that is the highest and best use for the property and also meets the mission and vision of the grant providers." said Joe Kasprzak during the most recent St. Johnsbury select board meeting.
