ST. JOHNSBURY - The abandoned armory in St. Johnsbury will have a new look soon at the hands of a local who said that this type of project is right up his alley.
Gregory Jackmuah serves on the chair of the Design Committee and on the Designated Downtown Committee. He is passionate about and believes that the armory can be restored. “People stop me and say, ‘Are you really going to do something with this?’” he said. “So I really feel there’s a strong desire to resuscitate.”
The armory is a public building that closed in 2009. But on October 27, cleaning crews came out to do their part. Turns out, Jackmuah isn’t the only one with a vision of what the building could be.
“I’d just like to see traffic here,” volunteer Robin Jacobs said. Jacobs is also a Reality Associate at Southebys Four Season’s Real Estate. “I’d like to see kid events here,” she said. “I’d like to see this building used to a benefit the people that are paying taxes on it.” The theme holds true, even Jackmuah shared that he hopes new memories can be made here and the old ones will be remembered.
“We might put candles in the windows for Christmas time— battery operated candles,” Jackmuah said. “Make it alive. Make it beautiful and it will start to rekindle memories of when it was a great place.”
They believe that the armory could be restored into the type of place St. Johnsbury needs.
