ST. JOHNSBURY - St. Johnsbury may have a new town plan that is on the way. The new plan would last for a half decade and would affect the town's budget and spending. Two important topics on the budget consists of universal recycling laws and tourism.
The recycling laws would change the way the town operates the garbage disposal, recycling, and composting, the latter of which would make it a little bit tougher on the town financially. Composting is a little more expensive then just regular recycling and trash, as another process is added to waste management. During the meeting, the townspeople had brought up a few issues and a few concerns on these matters.
Another concern of the town is making the town more appealing to tourists and other Vermonters. While most flock to the Northeast Kingdom during the winter to ski and snowboard at Burke, St. Johnsbury would like to tap into that oppurtunity and continue to have people come and shop at local businesses.
Susan Cherry, Chair of Planning, commented, "policies that are the town, how do we see ourselves, and what is that we want to do, in order for our town to position itself in the state". All of these questions are slowly being put together by the board. The next step for the town is to advertise a public meeting so that more people will attend.
Though the process has been time consuming, Amy Davis, planning commission member, says it's better it take this slow, "sometimes what you find if you jump the gun, is that if you don't get enough feedback early on. Then, you're having to go back and revise and do the process again."
