ST. JOHNSBURY - It's time to register your children for Pre-K and the St. Johnsbury School is sharing information on how to do so. Michelle Fox is the Early Education Coordinator at the St. Johnsbury School and states the benefits of registering children early for the Pre-K program.
"You'll be guaranteed a slot here in the St. Johnsbury district," Fox said. "but we also have partner sites around the community where children are able to attend if they are not able to attend our schools here."
Registering early is important in the St. Johnsbury district, but how do you do it?
Fox says parents can call the St. Johnsbury School to speak with the receptionist about scheduling an appointment. There are two events coming up for those parents who schedule appointments. They are on May 13th from 11a.m. to 4p.m. and the other is on June 6th from 7a.m. to 3:30p.m.
"When they come in they need 3 proofs of residency that they are St. Johnsbury residents, birth certificates and immunization records," Fox said. "We also have a packet to fill out that gets sent prior to when they come in for the actual screening that the families fill out when they arrive here."
As for whether registration has increased or decreased, "At this time it's unclear." Fox said.
Due to Act 166, signed in 2014, St. Johnsbury residents have 10 hours of free Pre-K for 35 weeks each year.
"So we have three Pre-K programs that are all day programs for 4 year-olds and it follows our school day," St. Johnsbury School Prinicpal Jenna O'Farrell said. "Kids can come and go on the bus and take naps in their classroom and they eat both lunch and breakfast the classroom and we are accepting a list of 3 year-olds because we do a partial day for 3 year-olds."
On top of that program, the school is holding a Kindergarten Practice Day on Tuesday, May 10th. The program is open to any St. Johnsbury Pre-K student. The day begins where the children will get bussed to the St. Johnsbury School, and experience gym, art, music, snacks in the cafeteria and play time on the playground. It's a half day and it gives the students the experience of of what kindergarten will be like.
