L.I. Spring Sports

spring sports LYNDON- Normally Vermonters are use to having a longer winter than others but with this winter, spring could actually be coming early to the North East. That means spring sports around the area may be able to get a jump start on the season.

April to June is three short months to get a full season in for a spring sports team especially when we had snow until about halfway through April like last spring. With such little time and so many games towards the end of the season you could be feeling like a pro team playing three to four games a week if it baseball. Often spring isn't even a thing in Vermont, mud season sounds more appropriate. After a week or so of mud season we jump right into summer so Vermont is more like a three season state rather than four. This year could be looking a little better than previous years with many teams already able to practice outside.

"All teams have been out". Lyndon Institute Athletic Director Paul Wheeler mentioned "We've been able to practice outdoors much earlier than we normally can. Only twice in the past 12 years have we been outside before April 1st". This rare head start could help out a school looking to have a strong season in many sports.

Last season the boys golf team along with the girls ultimate team won the state championships. This season L.I. looks to keep the streak going with those two sports, and be competitive and possibly bring home a trophy with a couple other teams.

"Our boys track team finished runner-up in the state championship meet last season and they should be strong contenders again this year. Baseball and softball will be competitive as they usually are and girls Ultimate will once again be strong".

As far as game are concerned they will not be starting earlier than usual. The schedules for the spring sports are actually made at the beginning of the fall season. This makes start dates for spring games already established and locked in.

Baseball and softball scrimmage for the first time on Saturday, April 2nd. Then the actual season will begin when those teams play their first regular season games on Tuesday, April 12th. Track and Field starts their regular season schedule on April 12th as well. Ultimate's first match is Tuesday, April 26th. Golf will be getting a little bit of a later start as they see their first match on May 2nd. Ultimate's first match is Tuesday, April 26.

A big season in store for L.I. in the upcoming season and they hope to add a few more championships to the pile they have already won this year.
