DANVILLE - The community gathered Wednesday night to congratulate Blain and Diana Roy on the completion of their new home.
While attending a basketball game in February, the Roy's home burned to the ground with the family's pet dog still inside.
In the time of darkness, the Northeast Kingdom Habitat for Humanity was there to help.
At the ceremony, Diana made a speech in tears thanking everyone who had helped them in the last nine months. "We will never be done with it," she said, "we still have mental and emotional issues to deal with, it's something that is never going to go away."
The Roy family was chosen among eight applicants to receive help. "They have a need, they are living in sub-standard housing... and we look for families that would make good neighbors and would have good ties to the community," said NEK Habitat for Humanity President, Dan Swainbank.
The project by the NEK Habitat for Humanity was the first to be completely funded and finished. The new home was built on the remaining foundation from their old home.
"You can't really put it into words. I thank everyone so much for what they have done," said Blain Roy. "After a while thank you seems old but the community has just been phenomenal at everything they have done and we love them to death."
The Roy family plans on helping the Habitat for Humanity with their next project.
