BURKE - Yesterday, the Saint Johnsbury Academy alpine ski team hosted a giant slalom race at Burke Mountain. The team performed strongly throughout the day, with individual skiers placing in the top ranks, and impressive overall team scores.
BURKE— The olympics get under way Friday Night in South Korea. 13 athletes with a connection to the Green Mountain State are competing in the games. Several of them coming from Burke Mountain Academy.
Mikaela Shiffrin is among some of the graduates of the ski school headed to South Korea.
BURKE— Nearly two years after Ariel Quiros was found to have been misusing EB-5 funds at Burke Mountain, the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) has settled and says that Quiros will pay up.
The judgement came on Friday and says that Quiros agreed to pay over $81 million as part of the settlement.
BURKE - The Burke Town School is looking into renovating its facilities after a One Burke Community visit back in october. The Burke School Board, who attended the meeting, approved of $7,500 to be spent completing a report looking into plans for a Preliminary Facility Analysis Report.
BURKE - Burke Mountain Resort and Lyndon State College are working together to offer a program to teach people how to ski. This program offers a 40% discount on one ski class, and is the first time that LSC and the Resort have created a program like this.
EAST BURKE- The town of East Burke is preparing for one of their favorite times of the year. But this wintery season doesn't involve reindeer and mistletoe. It involves the ski poles and double black diamonds.
East Burke is preparing for yet another ski season. The mountain is set to open tomorrow at 9AM to the public. The mountain had a preliminary opening today for season pass holders only.
EAST BURKE - Painter Patricia Mitchell taught herself all that she knows. From beginning to paint in 1990 to now leading her own classes and selling her work. Mitchell hosted a paint and brew event at the Publick House in East Burke last night.
BURKE-Tuesday October 7th, Burke Mountain Ski Resort started blowing snow at the Summit and on the Willoughby trail. Temperatures in the coming week look cool enough to maintain the snow for the next few nights. Snowmakers at Burke began preparing for another winter season with the help of portable snowmaking machines. More cold weather is predicted for the future. They are planning to continue making snow into the weekend, making them a whole two weeks earlier than when they began last year.
BURKE- Vermont is well known for it’s skiing and mountain biking throughout the state. One spot in particular is becoming more popular. The town of Burke is being recognized for as a popular destination for both mountain biking and skiing.
EAST BURKE- It's been seventeen years in the making. The Connecticut River Conservancy and Passumpsic Valley Land Trust have finally begun construction tearing down the East Burke Dam.
Burke Mountain- While the Ronnie Berlack Training facility is not the oldest building located at Burke Mountain Academy, it is one of the most important and community-centered buildings on the school's campus. The training facility was raised in the aftermath of disaster, Ronnie Berlack, who was a student attending Burke Mountain Academy, tragically died in an avalanche during a skiing competition in Europe over 4 years ago. It was amidst this tragedy, that his father, Steve Berlack, decided to create a new training facility for the school that his son loved so much.
East Burke- Kingdom Trails in East Burke has seen a fifteen percent growth in the past year, and it has had an impact on the rest of West Burke as well.
BURKE- Over this past warm and sunny Easter weekend, skiers and riders got their last chance to hit the slopes at Burke Mountain Resort. After a season packed full with powder and beautiful days, Burke has officially closed their ticket windows for skiing and riding.
BURKE- Winter biking also known as fat biking has become increasingly popular among mountain bike enthusiast. The so called “Fat tires” on the bike allow bikers to ride throughout the winter Bruce Giehill explains “A fat bike is similar to a mountain bike, expect for as the name implies the tire is a lot bigger. On a typical mountain bike you're going to run a two/ two and a half inch tire for a fat bike you're going to run a three and a half inch all the way up to a four point eight inch tire. So its something you'd see more on a motorcycle.”
BURKE - Burke's Senior Meal Site serves up more than just a bite to eat, like featuring artists to play music for anyone interested. On Sunday, musicians played for a couple of hours for people to sing along and dance to.

BURKE- For 27 years now, one local organization has been lending a helping hand to those in need across the Northeast Kingdom. The Hand to Hand program is a program that brings the joy of the holidays straight to the doors of families in need. The program coordinates and acts as the middle man between sponsors and families in need of Burke, Sheffield, Sutton, East Haven, Newark and Wheelock.
BURKE - The town of Burke has a decision to make come Monday evening. The community will be voting on whether or not to keep their elected listers, or substitute them with a private company. A town’s listers are the people who keep track of the properties in town.
BURKE - Being a firefighter is East Burke means a couple of things; you are dedicated to helping other people and you are a volunteer. Several of the volunteers happen to also be college students in the area.
BURKE - As today comes to a close, Burke Mountain still has yet to pay their taxes. Burke Mountain owed more than $400,000 dollars in taxes. Originally Burke Mountain owed $30,000 dollars in late fees. However, if the remaining amount was not paid in full by today, an additional $4,000 dollars would and will be added on.
BURKE - Skiers and snowboarders don’t get your hopes up if you were planning to hit Burke Mountain this Thanksgiving, mother nature isn’t quite cooperating.
BURKE - Burke Mountain could be facing more issues - this time paying their property taxes. The town of Burke has not yet heard from Burke Mountain regarding the taxes they owe.

Last year across the Northeast Kingdom, resorts had a record breaking winter, but not in a good way.
