EAST BURKE - Burke Mountain is taking new ownership to a whole new level with new snow guns coming to the kingdom.
On Tuesday crews were working on the 140 new snow guns that arrived late last week. The snow guns came to Burke from Wachusett Mountain in Massachusetts and are being prepared for installation.
The installation of the new snow guns is a group effort between Burke Mountain Academy and Qburke Mountain Resorts. The old snow guns are remaining in place, the new guns will be added to increase the amount of snow that Burke Mountain can produce. As well as getting new snow guns Burke will also be getting a new compressor. With a new compressor that runs mostly on electricity Burke will be able to lower its carbon footprint, as well as start to make snow sooner in the season and longer into the spring. The new compressor will significantly reduce the amount of energy required to make snow.
The new improvements to snow making will not only help the average skier or rider but also the Burke Mountain Academy students. The new snow making will allow snow snow to be made all season if needed on the training hill. This would allow BMA students to get the full season out of Burke.
Construction is slated to be done by the end of October possibly early November. With lots of new equipment coming to Burke they are planning on opening sooner than they ever have in the past. Burke Mountains general manger Tim McGuire says "If we have a typical winter we should be able to reach the goal of opening November 23, 2012 which I think will probably be the earliest Burke has ever opening in its history."
