BURKE - The Burke Town School has saved money, and it wasn’t cheap. After three years of planning and spending $450,000 to upgrade to their heating system, the school is finally reaping the benefits.
The project, which was finished just before the start of school year in August, was introduced three years ago. It required a new boiler, boiler room, copy room, and a classroom.
"I'm thrilled with this,” says Tony DeMasi, a member of the school board, “this has just been everything I've dreamed of and more."
The project was funded by two grants, a five year lease, and a $330,000 fund from the capital reserve.
“We're heating the buildings for a lower cost, so we're saving money," says DeMasi.
As of now, the school has saved close to $20,000 in heating and electricity costs, and according to DeMasi, those savings will pay for the cost of the boiler within the next five years.
DeMasi believes that by saving money that would be spent on electricity and heating bills, the school is able to purchase educational tools such as books and computers instead.
"So we're keeping the tax rate down and funding our school at the same level."
