Government Shutdown Effects on NEK

capitol hillAROUND THE NEK - With a government shutdown taking effect Tuesday at 12:00 AM in the United States, the Northeast Kingdom may see some changes of it’s own if Washington doesn’t come to an agreement tonight.

Museums around the area may see changes and setbacks if on October first the government can’t pass a budget bill.

The Fairbanks Museum in Saint Johnsbury could very well be affected by the government shutdown. Adam Kane, the director of the Museum, said they receive one grant from the Institute of Museums and Libraries that may be halted if there is a federal sequester.

Bob Joly, the Curator of Collections for the St. Johnsbury Athenaeum, has a feeling the government won’t have an effect on the athenaeum.

“I don’t think [the sequester will affect us], although we have gotten grants before,” said Joly. “We don’t currently get any direct government money.”

If you are a Veteran, you may find some changes when it comes to getting benefits, as they may be delayed as well.

If you’re getting a passport, and you have already sent in your application, you may see a delay in getting it back and may not see it at all until the sequester ends.
