WELLS RIVER - While snow is still on the baseball diamond, Blue Mountain Union practiced in the gym. The Bucks are getting ready for their 2013 season.
The baseball and softball teams took to the floor of the Doctor Harry Rowe gymnasium on their second day of practice.
Three years ago, the Bucks were state champions, the last two years the team came up short in the finals.
This year, Coach Scott Blood has placed a strong emphasis on strength and conditioning. Blood believes hard work in practice makes a big difference. "I have a responsibility as a coach to sure my players are properly fit," Blood said, "but I also believe that if you go above and beyond outside of the games, it's going to carry over into the game."
Senior pitcher Kyle Farquharson hopes that improving the location of pitches will help his team recapture the title. "If you can really spot in high school baseball- hit your spots and put in where you want it to - you're going to be a dominant pitcher on the mound," Farquharson explained, "I think myself, as well as our younger guys and another senior all can work on that. If we can do that, we're going to dominate on the mound."
Kyle is not the only Farquharson hard at work training. His sister Jordan, a sophomore, was also working hard on her softball pitching skills. Jordan is one of a few promising young players that could lead BMU to victory. "This year we're going to have to rely on a team (of) nine girls going out there and doing the job that we always relied on one girl to do," explained BMU Softball Head Coach Rodney Rood, "the talent we have coming in as freshmen is just amazing. They want to be here, they want to play ball, and they're ambitious so they'll work hard." Rood acknowledges that even with this new infusion of young players, the graduation of several seniors last spring will make the season more challenging.
BMU Softball Senior Harley Davis believes that attitude is everything. "The most important thing we can do is stay positive about anything," Davis said, "losses are going to be important for us, because we haven't really lost in the past and it's going to be important."
Both BMU teams open their season at home against rival Woodsville on Friday April 12th, at 4:30 PM.
