Lyndon- Members of the Experimental Aircraft Association talk about the importances of being safe when flying. The Monday night meeting was the first of three flight safety classes where they also speak about some of the myths concerning flying.
The Thomas Winans Terminal Building was the location for Mondays meeting at the Caledonia Regional Airport. Its no myth that more people are afraid of flying then getting behind the wheel of a car. The meeting was there to put to rest some of those myths along with teach new pilots about how to be safe in the skies.
"Twenty nine point nine million flight hours, now thats one death per fifty thousand hours which on the surface doesn't seem like much" official of the EAA said.
This doesn't seem like much when you compare the totals of deaths from plane crashes to automobile crashes. On average automobiles take thirty seven million American lives a year, compared to the most deaths recorded by plane crashes in a single year which is just over three thousand. The same official went on to say.
"There was one study and what it did was looked at multiple pilots, pilots that did most of their within fifty miles of their airport and the people that were doing most of there flying point to point cross country. They picked up a group of pilots that had about the same number of hours and flew about the same number of hours a year. The local pilots had a higher accident rate then the cross country pilots did".
This stunning fact is why it is important for local recreation pilots need to take safety courses. The EAA is currently trying to get younger participants into the world of flying. There was a one younger boy who attended the meeting last night who is hopping to be able to get into a plane and fly it himself one day.
