parking meterST. JOHNSBURY- The town of St. Johnsbury takes in more revenue from parking meters and ticket related incidents than you may think. Each year, the revenue from parking meters is around $26,000 and about $15,000 comes from ticket related incidents.

    While the parking meters are established to make sure parking is available for customers and tourists, there are different opinions between the law enforcement and the public. Police Chief Houde believes, “The tickets are just an enforcement piece to try to make sure that people are feeding the meters and paying for their time in those parking spots.”

            While each meter costs .25 cents per hour and knowing that parking tickets can result anywhere from $5 to $50, some shop owners feel as though it does not attract customers to their business. Ed Poginy, an Eastern Main Market employee, said, “It’s discouraging for people to want to park here when they have to pay the meters.”

            Though many have different views on parking meters, the revenue that is collected from parking meters and other ticket related incidents are used to keep meters functioning. The revenue is also used to pay the staff, pay for the supply of tickets and to mail late notices.
