fire fighter brushSAINT JOHNSBURY - Crews were busy Saturday afternoon in Saint Johnsbury as high winds blew embers from a small fire onto a hill off Route 2 catching it on fire. The Saint Johnsbury fire department were called to an area of land off Route 2 in East Saint Johnsbury after a homeowner started a fire in a firepit and with the help of strong winds, blew embers onto the grass starting another fire "the wind was just right" says fire chief Troy Ruggles "the grass was dry enough so it was perfect conditions for a brush fire."

It took crews about 45 minutes to put out the fire as well as all the hot spots which burned more than 2 acres of land.

"The fire was headed towards a couple of buildings which we were able to prevent it from getting to but it was a pretty sizeable fire."

A small patch of snowpack helped prevent the fire from getting any farther up the hill and Ruggles would like to remind everyone when having a fire to be aware of your surroundings as well as the weather "the grass is dry enough this time of year that it can be easily ignited and that with a hint of wind, could blow embers and start a fire like today."
