BURLINGTON - They played hard for 45 minutes, but Lyndon Institute was not able to grab a Division 2 State Championship Monday night, held at Gutterson Field House on the campus of the University of Vermont.
The Vikings faced off against the number one seed, the Woodstock Wasps, for the third time this season. The previous two encounters went similar to Monday, with Woodstock coming out victorious.
The first period was quiet for both teams, as neither side recorded any goals or penalties. But in the second period, the Wasps came out hot, and found the back of the net three times.
"I think we didn't do well grabbing the rebounds and coveirng up in front of the net," said LI Head Coach Chris Meunier. "They got away from some of my guys. [Woodstock] has guys who can score, they have guys who can finish. They're strong, they're big guys."
The Wasps added one more goal in the third period to give them a 4-0 lead. They would go on to win by that score.
Lyndon's freshman goalie, Sawyer Goodwin, gave his best effort to keep the Vikings close in the match—stopping 37 of the 41 shots that came his way.
Despite the loss, Coach Meunier said there are plenty of things to be proud of for his team.
"Not many teams in their high school careers get to come here and play. This team came from quite a divided team to a very well- gelled team."
The team, which consists of both commuter students, and dorm students, took some time to become acclamated before they started playing at a high level.
"I was the new coach. I brought in a new system to them, and we worked as a team towards the end of the season," noted Meunier. "Heck of a season."
The team, which started the season 4-6, ended on a 11-1 run before losing Monday night.
