DANVILLE - The annual Joe's Pond ice out competition has officially come to a close. That means spring is officially here in the Northeast Kingdom. This year the ice went out on april 10th at four fifty seven in the afternoon. The friendly competition which started in 1988 drew in over 10,000 submissions this year from across the country.

This year's Ice out was the third earliest on record since the competition began in 1988. The earliest was back on April 5th, of 2010 and the second earliest was on April 8th of 2013.

When the ice out contest first started in 1988 by Jules Chatot and his friends they gathered each submission in a notebook kept by Jules. The first year they only had a few hundred people but the popularity quickly grew to 1,500 tickets sold by 1990. That is when Jules's daughter set up a new database instead of using the notebook. Over the years the competition grew and in 2013 they added the ability to make your bet when the ice would go out online.

Each year the proceeds are split fifty fifty between the winner and the joes pound association. And this year's winner of the 2021 ice out competition was Galina Mesko of Newport Vermont with the winning time of 4:59 PM on April 10th.
