Warm Weather Leads to Early Fishing

fishingAround the NEK- "There are always new places to go fishing. For any fisherman, theres always a new place, always a new horizon," said Former Professional Golfer Jack Nicklaus. Thanks in part to an early spring and warm temperatures, local fisherman can begin to expand their horizon.

Of course when it comes to fishing, there are obvious benefits that accompany an early spring, but negatives certainly follow as well.

Because of the early warm temperatures, local fish hatcheries are being allowed to stock water bodies ahead of schedule, including the Bald Hill Fish Hatchery located in Newark.

Chris Thompson one of the employees at the fish hatchery shed some light into what goes into a normal stocking season, and how an early spring affects the day-to-day routine.

"There is usually snow left on opening day, which doesn't allow anglers the ease of access to the water, however this year because of the snow melting so early anglers have more access to the water."

Also due to the warmer temperatures, the hatcheries can begin to stock the bodies of water ahead of schedule, allowing local fishermen the chance to begin fishing.

Local fisherman Timothy Hale believes that the warmer temperatures will allow for a better fishing season for all who fish.

"It'll be positive for the fishermen themselves because I believe the water temperatures are going to rise quickly and the water will be lower and more clear, so the fish are going to be able to see the bait and so the fishing action is going to be probably really good."

However due to the incline in temperature, and the fact that the hatcheries only stock once a season, this could lead to a rapid decline in fish quicker than normal.

"I think in the near future its going to be really good fishing for the fishermen, but in the long term if we don't have a lot of rain this spring or summer, I'm afraid we're going to have drought conditions, and some fish may die, due to the small streams and rivers drying up." Says Hale.

In a situation where the spring has come early, leading to an early fish-stocking season, the positives are endless, however the negatives side affects that accompany an early spring are just as big as the positives.
